Overview
Search is changing faster than at any point since Google launched. A growing share of your buyers now ask a question and get a single synthesised answer — with two or three cited sources — before they ever see a list of links. They read the answer, note who was quoted, and move on. Often they never click at all.
That shift creates a new question for every B2B marketing leader. Alongside “how do we rank?” sits a more urgent one: how do we get cited? Because in an answer-first world, being the source an AI quotes is worth more than being the third blue link nobody scrolls to.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is how you win that citation. This guide explains what AEO is, how it relates to the SEO you already do, how the major answer engines decide who to quote, and the concrete steps a B2B team can take this quarter. Each section links to a deeper guide in this hub.
This guide is the pillar for our wider work on AI visibility. If you want help putting it into practice, see our AI visibility service.

1. What answer engine optimisation actually is
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring and writing content so that AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and others — can extract it, trust it, and cite it as the answer to a user’s question. The goal is not to rank in a list. It is to be the source the AI quotes when it composes its reply.
That is a meaningful departure from traditional search. A search engine hands the user a list of possible resources and lets them choose. An answer engine attempts to give the exact answer directly, assembled from many sources at once. Ask one for the best vendors in a category and it returns a synthesised shortlist, not ten links for you to open and compare.
AEO is not a separate trick
It is tempting to treat AEO as a new lever you pull in isolation. It is not. You earn citations when your page is crawlable, easy to extract, clearly attributed to a credible author or brand, genuinely more useful than commodity content, and corroborated by the wider web. Most of that is good marketing and good SEO, applied with extra discipline.
If you are new to the term, start with our plain-English explainer: what is AEO.
AEO, GEO and the language problem
You will see several acronyms used almost interchangeably. AEO usually refers to being selected for a direct answer. GEO — generative engine optimisation — is a broader umbrella for visibility across AI-generated environments. The distinction matters less than the shared goal: be the trusted, quotable source. We use AEO throughout this guide.
2. Why AEO matters for B2B in 2026
For B2B specifically, the stakes are higher than the raw search-volume numbers suggest. B2B buying is research-heavy, multi-stakeholder, and increasingly self-directed. Buyers form their shortlist long before they speak to sales — and that shortlist is now being shaped inside AI answers.
Answers are displacing clicks
Google AI Overviews now appear above traditional results for a large and growing share of queries, occupying the most valuable real estate on the page. The citations inside them capture attention that once flowed to organic listings. On informational queries in particular, you should expect fewer clicks per impression.
Citation is the new ranking
Rank position alone no longer guarantees visibility. In 2026, only around a third of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top ten for the same query. That reframes the goal entirely: you no longer need to be number one to be seen. You need to be the most trustworthy, extractable, semantically complete source on the topic.
| You no longer need to rank #1 to be cited. You need to be the most trustworthy, extractable and complete source on the topic — wherever you sit in classic rankings. |
AI-referred buyers are higher value
Buyers who arrive via an AI citation tend to be further along in their research, which makes them higher-intent than average organic traffic. Reported data shows AI-referred visitors converting at several times the rate of standard organic visitors and spending notably more time on site. Even when they do not click, being named as a source carries an implicit endorsement that lifts branded search and trust.
We unpack the demand-side shift in detail in how B2B buyers use AI to research vendors.
3. How answer engines choose their sources
Each engine weights structure, freshness and trust slightly differently, but the underlying mechanics rhyme. Understanding them tells you exactly what to optimise.
Step one: query fan-out
The engine rarely searches your buyer’s exact question. It breaks that question into several smaller sub-queries and searches each one separately. Ask “what’s the best AEO approach for a B2B SaaS company?” and it may run “AEO strategy 2026”, “answer engine optimisation for SaaS” and “AI citation best practices” as distinct searches. Your content needs to match those sub-queries, not just the headline phrasing.
Step two: retrieval
It pulls candidate passages from crawlable, well-structured pages, strongly favouring content where the answer sits in the first third of the page. If your core answer is buried below roughly the 30% mark, there is a better-than-even chance it is never considered.
Step three: synthesis and citation
It composes an answer and attributes the passages it leaned on, preferring sources with strong experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) signals and corroboration elsewhere on the web. A January 2026 content study found the strongest positive correlations with citation were clarity and summarisation, E-E-A-T signals, question-and-answer formatting, clear section structure and structured data. Promotional tone correlated negatively.
What this means in practice
Structure matters as much as substance. A brilliant insight in paragraph nine loses to a clear, evidence-backed answer in the opening lines. The rest of this guide is about engineering that advantage.
4. AEO vs SEO vs GEO: how they fit together
“Should we do AEO or SEO?” is the wrong question. AEO is a layer built on top of SEO, not a replacement for it. If your pages are hard to crawl, poorly indexed or weakly linked, your AI visibility suffers too.
| Term | Optimises for | Primary goal |
| SEO | Traditional search rankings | Earn clicks from a list of results |
| AEO | AI citation and direct-answer features | Be the source the AI quotes |
| GEO | Generative AI systems broadly | Visibility across AI-generated answers |
A useful shorthand: SEO cares about your content; AEO cares about how that content is structured for extraction. Create content for humans, but package it for AI. The two disciplines share a foundation — crawlability, authority, clean architecture, structured data — and reinforce each other.
For a full side-by-side of where they differ and overlap, read AEO vs SEO. And because AI visibility is built on SEO fundamentals, our B2B SEO guide is the companion to this one.
5. The seven-part AEO playbook
These are the moves that consistently move the needle. None is exotic; the advantage comes from doing all seven with discipline.
1. Lead with the answer
Open every article and every major section with a direct, complete answer of roughly 130 to 160 words — the block size engines tend to extract. State the claim and its supporting evidence together so the passage stands alone, as if it were the only thing the reader saw. Treat your introduction as a citation target, not an abstract.
2. Structure for extraction
Use a clean heading hierarchy, short paragraphs, and descriptive subheads phrased as the questions buyers actually ask. Build FAQ sections as standalone answer units — each question answered crisply in its first sentence. These are among the structures most likely to be cited from deep-page positions.
3. Cover the query fan-out
For each head question, map the adjacent sub-questions a researcher would ask next, and answer them on the page. You are trying to match the many small searches the engine runs, not just the one your buyer typed.
4. Back every claim with evidence
Pair claims with statistics, named sources and concrete examples. Verifiable evidence reduces hallucination risk and acts as a trust signal that makes your passage safer to quote. Test definitive phrasing against hedged phrasing — confident, specific statements extract better.
5. Build E-E-A-T and entity consistency
Name and credential your authors. Keep the facts about your brand — what you are, who you serve, what you do and do not do — consistent across your site, your profiles and third-party mentions. Earn mentions in trusted industry lists and press so the wider web corroborates you. Engines simulate user trust, and consistent entities are easier to cite.
6. Keep content fresh
Answer engines favour current, authoritative content. Date your pages, refresh statistics, and revisit high-value answers on a schedule. Citation patterns shift as models are retuned, so treat AEO as ongoing maintenance rather than a one-off project.
7. Measure AI visibility
Track citations and brand mentions across engines, not just rankings and sessions. We cover the metrics and tools in how to track AI visibility.
6. Optimising for each answer engine
The fundamentals transfer across engines, but each rewards a slightly different emphasis. Optimise well for one and you largely serve the others.
| Engine | Answer style | What it rewards most |
| ChatGPT | Conversational, comprehensive | Context, completeness, clarity |
| Perplexity | Research, source-forward | Verifiable citations, factual precision |
| Google AI Overviews | Concise SERP summary | SEO strength plus schema and structure |
ChatGPT
ChatGPT Search provides timely answers with links, searching the web when it judges that would help, and favours conversational, comprehensive content. See how to get cited in ChatGPT for the full tactics.
Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews extract roughly 130 to 160 word blocks and lean on traditional SEO strength plus schema. In late May 2026 Google also brought Preferred Sources more visibly into Overviews and AI Mode. Our guide to Google AI Overviews for B2B covers how to win those slots.
Perplexity
Perplexity produces research-style answers with explicit citations, so it rewards precision and well-sourced claims above all. See Perplexity AI for B2B brand discovery.
7. The schema and technical foundation
Structured data will not rescue weak content, but it consistently appears among the signals correlated with citation. Schema.org markup turns implicit meaning into explicit, machine-readable facts: this is an organisation, this is an article by this author, this is the answer to this question. That clarity helps engines resolve your entity and extract the right passage.
A 2026 analysis of cited pages found Organization, Article and BreadcrumbList were the schema types most common on cited pages, with Google AI Mode citing higher-schema pages more than ChatGPT Search did. Start with those three, then add FAQPage and Person markup where appropriate.
For the full breakdown of which types matter and how to implement them, see schema markup for AI citation. And because none of it works without a crawlable, fast, well-linked site, pair it with strong technical SEO for B2B optimisation and the demand-side shift in how B2B buyers use AI in purchase decisions.
8. How B2B buyers actually use AI to research vendors
AEO is not only a content-team concern. It reflects a change in how buying happens. Instead of opening ten tabs, a buyer now asks an answer engine to define the category, list the leading options and compare them — then follows up with sharper sub-questions. Much of the early and middle funnel happens inside the AI answer, before a single vendor site is visited.
Because of query fan-out, your brand can enter or miss the consideration set across many small moments rather than one big keyword. If you are not the cited source when the shortlist forms, you are invisible at the exact moment the decision narrows.
The data and the strategic implications are in how B2B buyers use AI in purchase decisions.
9. How to measure AI visibility
If being cited is the new ranking, then citation share is the new rank tracking. Traditional analytics cannot see most of an answer engine’s value, because the user often reads the answer, notes your brand and never lands on your site. You need metrics built for citation and mention.
| Metric | What it tells you |
| Citation frequency | How often engines name you as a source |
| Citation share | Your citations vs competitors for target questions |
| Brand-mention rate | How often you are mentioned even without a link |
| Answer presence | Share of target questions where you appear at all |
| AI-referred conversion | Pipeline and revenue from AI-referred visitors |
The most reliable baseline is manual: list the questions your buyers ask, query each engine, and record who is cited. Layer monitoring tools on top for scale, and feed AI-referred sessions into your attribution model so AI visibility is reported alongside every other channel.
See how to track AI visibility for the full method, tools and cadence.
10. How to choose an AEO partner
AEO sits at the intersection of technical SEO, content strategy, authority building and analytics. The right partner does not treat it as a bolt-on; they build it into the same programme that drives your organic and content performance. A few questions worth asking any agency:
- Can they show how they track citation share across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews — not just rankings?
- Do they start from your buyers’ real questions and the query fan-out, or from a generic keyword list?
- Will they fix the technical and schema foundation, or only write content?
- Can they connect AI visibility to pipeline through your attribution model?

11. Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
Yes. SEO optimises for ranking and clicks; AEO optimises for being extracted and cited inside an AI answer. They share technical foundations but differ in how content is structured and measured. Full comparison: AEO vs SEO.
Do I need to rank #1 to be cited?
No. In 2026 most pages cited in AI Overviews do not rank in the top ten for the same query. Citation rewards extractable, trustworthy, semantically complete content regardless of exact position.
Where should the answer appear on the page?
In the first third. If your core answer sits below roughly the 30% mark of the page, there is a better-than-even chance it will not be cited.
How is AEO measured?
Through citation frequency and share, brand-mention rate, answer presence and AI-referred conversion — gathered by querying the engines directly and layering monitoring tools on top. See how to track AI visibility.
Is AEO worth it for a smaller B2B brand?
Yes, and arguably more so. You do not need decades of mentions to compete if you target a specific niche the larger players ignore, answer its questions better than anyone, and keep your brand entity consistent. Citation positions compound, so building extraction-ready content now secures slots before competitors react.
